Expanding the small-scale renewable energy scheme to include household batteries: Key policy, regulation and administrative changes to the scheme & expanding the SRES inspections program: Key learnings for industry
In July 2025 the Australian Government expanded the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) to introduce a subsidy for household solar batteries. The Clean Energy Regulator is responsible for the administration of the SRES, including the recent battery expansion.
The battery expansion provides financial and energy savings for consumers, broad benefits to the grid, and support measures to improve coordination of consumer energy resources.

Matthew Power, General Manager, Renewable Energy Target, Clean Energy Regulator (CER)

The Clean Energy Regulator’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) inspections program has inspected over 46,000 solar PV systems from 2010 to 2025 and has recently expanded to include solar battery storage inspections in the SRES.
The presentation highlights trends in compliance, substandard, and unsafe installations. Attendees will gain insight into inspection criteria, trending issues, and the program’s role in improving industry standards. Learn how data-driven oversight, collaboration, and regulatory enforcement are driving safer, more reliable solar and battery installations across Australia.
